Getting a Good Bedtime Routine

A relaxed routine makes all the difference to the night ahead, so here are some ideas for making bedtime happy and calm:

Splashing around

Not only is a bath before bedtime great for playing and having fun, but it's also an ideal way to start winding down and an opportunity to chat about your day too.

Soothe the senses

Massage or soothing strokes and cuddles can be very comforting to a child who may be worried about staying dry for the night ahead. It's important that they feel relaxed and happy as they go to sleep.

Dim the lights

Reading a story, singing songs, talking or having a cuddle are all perfect for taking the attention away from bedwetting. Make your child's bedroom cosy by keeping the lights low.

Older children

Older children are more independent at bedtime, but may still appreciate reading together, chatting through their day and even a cuddle before bedtime.

Ready for bed

DryNites® will help your child get a good night's sleep by keeping them dry all night, and also give them confidence on an overnight trip away from home.

Last wee

Encourage your child to visit to the loo one last time before bed. This will help avoid any potential accidents as well as reassure the child that they have taken a positive step towards a drier nights sleep.

No Drinks Please

Try to discourage drinks – especially caffeine and carbonated drinks - in lead up to bedtime. However always ensure that your child takes on sufficient fluids, particularly during the day (the recommended daily fluid intake for children is 7-8 cups per day) and when they are at school and not just leaving it to the evening.

Happy thoughts

Think positively. Don't talk about the last bedwetting incident. Instead focus on the pleasures of bedtime like sharing time together, laughing, talking and relaxing.

In case of accident...

If your child isn't wearing absorbent sleepwear and has an accident during the night, be prepared by having clean pyjamas and bedding near to hand to make the clean up as simple as possible. Putting on a pair of DryNites® after a nightime accident can help to reassure a child and restore their confidence as they settle back to sleep.

Calmly does it

If your child is likely to be upset by an accident, soothing music or warm towels can help to settle them while they get changed. Think about using a night-light in their bedroom instead of the main light.

Good night, sleep tight

Lots of reassurance for any children who express concern about bedwetting will boost their confidence and help them go to bed feeling happy.
